2009 Frelinghuysen Open Space
Accomplishments
-
A
resolution approved at the end of 2008 by Township Committee budgeted in
2009 for development of Forestry Management Plan. ForesTrees Consultants
completed a plan with Open Space and Environmental Committee input. The
plan was approved for 2009-2013 term offering the Township the opportunity
to apply for state grants to complete goals noted in the Plan.

Township Survey results for open space questions are attached. Residents
express wide support regarding open space preservation efforts.

Open
Space webpage continues to be maintained and provides historical and
educational information, current events and monthly meeting minutes.

Open
Space Committee hosted a table at Founder’s Day. Preservation information,
tree identification booklets and an interactive stormwater management
Enviroscape was available to residents.

Hosted 4
“Chipper Parties” at Frelinghuysen Elementary School to remove invasive
alanthius trees. Dan Carson donated chipper at 3 gatherings and extra
manpower at all 4 work days.

Developed and mailed a personalized outreach letter to property owners on
the Open Space target list. Positive responses from 2 residents.

Posted
open space signage for November election and referendum for Garden State
Preservation Trust Fund replenishment.

Supported and requested that the Township Committee continue the Land
Owner Appraisal agreement that is in place for prospective landowners
desiring to preserve property.

Worked
collaboratively another year with The Land Conservancy and Megan Haidet in
the effort of preservation within the township.
2008 Frelinghuysen Open Space
Accomplishments
-
Revision of Open Space Ordinance 2006-12 which
includes wording that reflects the Open Space and Recreation Plan, and a
non-member paid secretary.

Created a Native/Invasive Plant Species library
with Environmental Commission support that is located at Town Hall and
open to Frelinghuysen residents.

Open Space webpage continues to be maintained
and provides historical and educational information, current events and
monthly meeting minutes.

Approval of NJ DEP Division of Parks and Wildlife
$3,000 grant. Resolution approved by Township Committee to budget in 2009
for development of Forestry Management Plan.

Revised Warren County Open Space Plan approved by
Warren County Planning Board. Includes Frelinghuysen Township Open Space
priority list.

PowerPoint presentation made to Warren County
Charitable Trust Foundation and site visit led for grant funding request
in regards to the Reisberg acquisition.

Honorary Red Oak tree planted for The Nature
Conservancy on 5 acre open space parcel adjacent to Town Hall in lieu
of payment for their Native/Invasive forum presentation.

2008 Township Survey distributed and returned. Results have been
tabulated for committee’s review and planning.

Joint Meeting of Recreation
Committee and Open Space Committee to discuss goals and objectives of
township active and passive recreation opportunities.

Joint Meeting of all township
committees voted open space preservation as number one of top 3 township
planning goals.

Public Native/Invasive
educational program hosted by Eric Olsen, The Nature Conservancy.

Open Space motto “Open Spaces ~
Simply Beautiful” chosen from a combined youth input.

Open Space web page that provides
historical and education information, current events and monthly meeting
minutes.

Corresponded with Governor
Corzine in support of the Garden State Preservation Trust Fund for
continued monetary support of land preservation in 2008.

Three “Chipper Parties” conducted
at the future Frelinghuysen Recreation Complex by dedicated community
members.

Land Preservation Forum hosted by
Jennifer McCulloch (MLC) and Dave Piffer (ANJEC) to educate residents
about the benefits and costs of land preservation.

Skylands Birding & Wildlife
Trails – submission and acceptance of Johnsonburg Swamp to their extended
New Jersey Trails map.
-
Township Open Space current and
target property list approved and submitted to Warren County Planning
Department for inclusion in the updated Warren County Open Space Plan.

Township approval for application
to the NJ Shade Tree Federation for the creation of a township Forestry
Management Plan, co-sponsored by the Environmental Commission.

State referendum approval of $200
million to the GSPT Fund for continued Green Acres grant funding in 2008.
-
Second year successful
partnership with Jennifer McCulloch and the Morris Land Conservancy in
promoting land preservation.
-
Open Space survey questions
approved and submitted to Planning Board for inclusion in the 2008
Township Survey. Questions will guide the OSAC in setting future goals and
objectives.
