These positions are by appointment of the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Township Committee

Recreation Committee

The Recreation Committee assumes a major role in developing a sense of community and enhancing the resident’s quality of life by providing recreational and social programs to preschool age children, youth, teen, adult, family, and senior populations and by organizing, sponsoring and hosting special events.

The Recreation Committee also serves as an advisory board to the Township Committee with respect to the initiation and coordination of township recreational programs. In addition, the Recreation Committee shall perform such other duties as the Township Committee may prescribe to it concerning recreation within the Township.

The Frelinghuysen Township Recreation Committee is comprised of the following positions;
Seven (7) members, Two (2) alternate members and a township appointed Liaison.

The functions of the committee are, but not limited to:

(1) Review current recreation programs and facilities in the Township to determine additional needs, and submit recommendations pertaining to parks recreation guidelines, policies, facilities, or user fees to the Township Committee.

(2) Provide and gather input and ideas recreation related long-range plans and goals.

(3) Coordinate recreation programs and facilities in the within the Township.

(4) Review all recreation related matters both “active” and “passive” submitted by the Township Committee

(5) Make recommendations to the Township Committee on operating and capital budget needs as well as fees and charges for Township owned recreation facilities.

(6) Promote the utilization of Township parks, recreation facilities and programs.

(7) Enhance the quality of life to all Township residents through the implantation of a wide variety recreation programs and services.

Open Space Committee

The Open Space Committee will consider and implement recommendations of the Open Space and Recreation Plan element of the Frelinghuysen Master Plan, to advise the Township Committee on suitable properties for preservation, foster environmental stewardship projects, and sponsor passive recreation activities.

The Open Space Committee is comprised of the following positions;
Seven (7) members, Two (2) alternate members and a township appointed Liaison.

Land Use Board

The Land Use Board, is responsible for developing, preserving, and improving the Land Use Master Plan of Frelinghuysen Township. The Board reviews and acts on applications for subdivisions and site plans. It also interprets the zoning ordinance and zoning map in order to determine if a variance, from the bulk and dimensional requirements of the ordinance or from a specifically permitted use in the zone, should be granted. The Board, along with its’ professional consultants, continues to gather, organize and distribute data respecting land use and the Township Master Plan and reviews, revises, recommends and interprets land use ordinances to the Township Committee for adoption consideration

The Land Use Board is comprised of the following positions;
Nine (9) members, Four (4) alternate members.

Environmental Commission

The Environmental Commission is established for the protection, development or use of natural resources, including water resources, located within the territorial limits of the Township. The Environmental Commission shall conduct research into the use and possible use of the open land areas of the Township and may coordinate the activities of unofficial bodies organized for similar purposes, and may advertise, prepare, print and distribute books, maps, charts, plans and pamphlets which in its judgment it deems necessary for its purposes. It shall keep an index of all open areas, publicly or privately owned, including open marshlands, swamps and other wetlands, in order to obtain information on the proper use of such areas, and may recommend to the Planning Board, plans and programs for inclusion in the Master Plan and the development and use of such areas.

Farmland Preservation Committee

The Farmland Preservation Committee is committed to pursuing and protecting farmland within the Township of Frelinghuysen.

Frelinghuysen Township boasts an impressive variety of dairy farms, crop fields, nurseries, and woodlands. It is the second largest agricultural land base in Warren County, and more than two-thirds of the Township is assessed as farmland. Of the land in Frelinghuysen Township that is not in agricultural production, most is covered by rich forests, wetlands, and winding streams. The Township is home to beautiful natural areas including Jenny Jump State Park and the Johnsonburg Swamp Preserve. The rolling hills, expansive fields, and pristine natural lands in Frelinghuysen Township combine to form one of the most scenic rural areas in New Jersey.
